U.S. Government Debt was 13 Trillion 562 Billion Dollars as of Septmebr 30, 2010.

I got a wrong idea that China and Japan hold most of the US government debt.

While I was trying to find who hold Chinese local government bonds, I found following the article.

To Whom Does the U.S. Government Really Owe Money?
http://politicalcalculations.blogspot.com/2011/03/to-whom-does-us-government-really-owe.html

Here’s link to U.S. Debt Pie Chart in the article.

According the chart, percentage of debt holders are:

Sub Total 68.1% – U.S. holders

  • 42.1% – U.S. Individuals and Institutions
  • 17.9% – Social Security Trust Fund
  • 6.0% – U.S. Civil Service Retirement Fund
  • 2.1% – U.S. Military Retirement Fund

Sub Total 31.9% – Foreign holders

  • 9.5% – China
  • 6.3% – Japan
  • 1.4% – UK
  • 1.3% – Brazil
  • 1.6% – Oil Exporters
  • 11.7% – All other foreign nations

Did Mr. Obama say that social security checks might not go out if congress could not come to an agreement by August 2?

If it was a joke, it’s not funny.

The article also says:

We found that as of September 29, 2010, the Federal Reserve held 966 billion dollars of the U.S. national debt in the form of U.S. Treasury Securities or Federal Agency Debt Securities, which represents 16.9% of all U.S. individual or institutional debt holdings, or approximately 7.1% of the total national debt.

I have to learn more about it to understand it.

Here’s another article. Figures are newer. In the article, total debt is $$14,342,909,569,328.74.
