X Japan – ToshI

On April 30, 2011, in Music, X Japan,

He is the vocalist of X Japan. (He started using recently the spelling, the first and the last in upper case.)

Funs comment most on Yoshiki (Leader/composer/drum/piano) and late Hide (guitar), but not so much about ToshI.  It’s a bit strange. Because without his voice, X Japan would not be X Japan. His voice is so unique and not replaceable that Yoshiki decided to disband X Japan at the peek of their career after ToshI left.

Irony is  that ToshI shined most when he sings songs that were not natural to him; physically and emotionally, at least before the disband.

The same links to some songs  at bottom, in case you like to listen first, as this post is a bit long for my standard.

When asked about the first record they bought, Yoshiki’s answer was ‘Kiss”, Pata’s (guiter) “Beatles” and ToshI replied “Momoe Yamaguchi” (legendary Japanese pop singer in 70’s who retired at age twenty-one).

In an interview, he laughed describing contrast of making albums in LA both his solo album and X Japan’s.

Other members of X japan never go to beach, stay pale and work in dark rooms for X Japan. PV for his solo album is shot outdoors, in the field under bright sun. He said that when he sang Yoshiki’s songs, he was required to immerse himself in the world of Yoshiki’s music.

To hit high notes of yoshiki’s songs, he strained his vocal cord, continued to have medical treatments to perform.

Yoshiki, in NHK interview 5 years after disband, talked that he wondered if it was his fault that ToshI left:

He used ToshI’s voice like an instrument. He thought and still thinks that he knows ToshI’s voice best, better than Toshi himself and he had exact image to the smallest thing how he wanted ToshI to sing his song, to the extent how hoarse his voice should be. ToshI must have his idea how he wanted to sing the song. But when the song was completed, ToshI was amazed and happy with the result.

Even 5 years after disband, Yoshiki wiped his tears running from behind his dark sun glasses while talking about ToshI.

He talked in the same interview that ToshI was normal person and Hide and he suggested, pushed ToshI how to behave on stage, that ToshI’s talk was down to earth and his normalcy and his outrageous look and performance made such an interesting contrast.

Another post later on after reunion.

Here’s the post:  X Japan ToshI – After the Reunion
